Creating
a Thinking and Learning Community
This course has been developed in response to
those
schools who have effectively established Teaching Thinking
approaches at the classroom level, but who now wish to
develop a more consistent and co-ordinated approach to
teaching thinking across the whole school community.

Who
is it for?
Everyone involved with teaching and learning in a school,
college or network: teachers, teaching assistants, formal leaders,
managers and governors.
Aims of the course
- to facilitate an ‘appreciative enquiry’
into an institutions current
situation regarding thinking for learning.
- to facilitate the creation of a school ‘vision’ for thinking for
learning and to identify the steps towards its realisation.
- to help build capacity for shared leadership and management in
the creation of a thinking for learning community.
- to communicate the latest developments in thinking for learning.
Course
content
The course explores:
- how to develop a more consistent and co-ordinated approach to
teaching thinking across the whole school.
- how the principles of teaching thinking – co-construction, challenge,
mediation, collaboration, and reflection might inform the wider
culture of the school community.
- the ways in which a thinking for learning community might be
sustained.
Course structure
The course consists of 12 – 15 hours of
taught time which
includes consultation time and collaborative work, structured
as follows:
1 Lead in consultation [2 hours]
Meeting with consultant to discuss the implications of the
course.
2 First full day session [5 hours]

3 Follow-up collaborative work
Between the two full day sessions, the school commits to
devoting some time to collaborative development work
which at this stage might include: staff consultation; pupil
consultation; meeting time etc. This experience will form
the
feedback at the following session.
4 Second full day session [5 hours]
5 Lead out consultation [2 hours]
Consultancy support with prioritisation and action planning.
