Emotional intelligence
“Emotional
Intelligence refers to
how we manage
ourselves, how we handle our relationships...it is fundamental
to effective thinking, it is fundamental to effective decision
making, it is fundamental to life.
I can’t imagine why we don’t include it in our school
curriculum... Emotional Intelligence is learnt and is learnable
and it can improve at any point in life."
Daniel
Goleman, Emotional Intelligence

“Hugely enriching and immediately applicable. This course
has impacted on us all both personally and professionally.”
“People have always needed emotional intelligence;
in complex times they need it more. The culture of change
is rife with anxiety, stress and ambiguity (and with the
exhilaration of creative breakthroughs). It is not surprising
that the most effective leaders are not those with the highest IQs
but those who combine mental intelligence with emotional
intelligence...Effective leaders work on their own and others’
emotional development. There is no greater skill needed
for sustainable improvement.”

Fullan Leading in a Culture of Change
Background
The Emotional Intelligence Course has been developed as
part of a menu of professional development building on the
pattern of our highly successful Teaching Thinking Certificate.
It arose originally from the work of a group of mixed agency
professionals working with children and young people in
Northumberland who all had initial contributions to make
to the course as it now stands.
It has been field tested by two networks of Northumberland
Schools and approved by the University of Newcastle as part
of their professional entry onto their MEd. courses.
Aims of the course
•
to equip participants with knowledge and understanding of
what it means to be ‘emotionally intelligent’.
• to provide participants with some introductory tools to develop
their own EI and that of others through growing self awareness
and management of relationships within their own community.
• to start to consider how to develop an ‘Emotionally Intelligent’
organisation where all members have an opportunity to
improve their learning and relationships.
• to make links with the 'Raising Standards' and ‘Every
Child Matters' agendas.
Course content
The sessions are interactive and reflective in
character with an
emphasis on using practical strategies designed to develop
the emotional intelligence or the participants and the those
they work with.We begin with self-awareness and
self-management and move onto the development of emotional
intelligence in relationships with others. Finally we look at how
we might encourage emotional intelligence across an entire
organisation or community.
Structure of the course
The course consists of 10– 12 hours of taught time
plus
approximately 10 hours of tasks to complete independently.
The use of a personal journal is recommended.
Typically there will be:
A full day’s introduction to the course,
covering the background
to emotional intelligence, how it connects with recent understanding
of how the brain works and starting to develop awareness of how
this might impact our professional practice.
2 half day sessions, or 3 twilight sessions. Each session includes
a chance for colleagues to reflect upon the task they have been
working on since the last session and introduces further elements
of developing EI through interactive methods.
Between each taught session colleagues complete a reflective
task based on what they have just learned,
supported by a personal
journal provided in the course materials. This experience will form
the basis of the feedback at the following session.
To gain accreditation for the Emotional Intelligence Certificate,
you should attend all of the taught sessions and complete each of
the reflective tasks in the personal journal. A final, short written
task outlining how you have used, or intend to use, what you have
learned about EI in your professional practice,
giving actual examples,
will be handed in for moderation by an
approved member of the
course tutoring team.
