Philosophy for Children Level 2

A four day, non residential course “Developing the Practice of Philosophical Enquiry
in Communities” f
or those who have completed the Philosophy for Children
Level 1
course.

The Level 2 qualification
permits practicioners to provide SAPERE certificated
Level 1 training to colleagues in their school or organisation.

SAPERE Certification follows attendance on the course and the submission of a
written assignment.

Who is it for?


Teachers, classroom assistants, curriculum leaders, tutors, trainers, advisors, managers
and lecturers who have:
- completed their Level 1
- received their SAPERE Level 1 certificate
- completed and kept a brief record of six enquiries they have facilitated
- become a member of SAPERE.

This course has proved particularly useful to schools, colleges and training
organisations who wish to provide their own 'in house' P4C Level 1 training
.

Aims of the course

- to continue to explore the processes and effects of P4C
- to further develop the skills necessary for encouraging communities of enquiry
- to develop the skills necessary for supporting the development of P4C
  amongst colleagues

Course content

The course further explores:

- The Educational Perspective:
  What are the philosophical and educational roots of Philosophy for Children?
  What is the Socratic tradition in education, and what is its relevance today?
- The Practice of Enquiry:
   How can we best facilitate enquiry to be philosophical?
  
How are we to evaluate philosophical enquiries and their facilitation?
- Resources for Enquiry: What stories and stimuli are suitable for philosophical
   enquiry?
- The Cognitive Dimension : How can philosophical enquiry help develop critical
   and creative thinking and learning?
- The Affective Dimension: How can philosophical enquiry help contribute to
  
emotional and social development?
- The Political Context: How can philosophical enquiry help to educate for
   citizenship in a pluralist society?
- Principles: What are the principles for training and practices of SAPERE
   and its courses?
- Connections: its links to wider agendas like: Curriculum Reform,
   Personalised Learning, and Every Child Matters.

Course participants will:

- enjoy learning together over an extended period of time
- encounter stimulating ideas in Philosophy
- experience collaborative learning in Community of Enquiry sessions
- learn to plan, resource and facilitate Community of Enquiry sessions

evaluating a particular enquiry, both educationally and philosophically
- analyse, evaluate and plan for the development of a community of
   philosophical enquiry in a teaching group

- receive support in submitting the written assignment required by SAPERE for
  Level 2 certification.

Structure of the course

The course extends over 24 hours in four full days along with 15 hours of
reflective workplace practice.

As an alternative to a non-residential course, a 3 day residential can be arranged
for schools, partnerships and organisations looking for an intensive, memorable,
community-building experience for its people)

The course is interactive and encourages participants to
try out the approach, techniques and resources in their own
context between sessions.

 

Cost

For individuals attending an open course in Northumberland
£500 per person


Accreditation

Participants attending the whole course can gain the SAPERE P4C Trainer
Certificate and also the nationally recognised 'Certificate in the Theory and Practice
of Philosophical Enquiry in Education' worth 20 Masters Level credits.


It is also possible to upgrade the certificate to gain 20 credits at Masters level at
Newcastle Universit.y
